Mancora

The best beaches in Peru are found near Máncora, and the town in a popular destination for wealthy Limeños. There are some comfortable hotels on the seafront as well as many luxury homes. The town has a very laid-back atmosphere and it makes a good stopping off point for those heading to or from Ecuador. The weather is hot and sunny all year, although from December to April it can be very hot and it rains. The waters in Máncora are quite warm and unpolluted.

The long, sandy beach in front of the town of Máncora is pleasant, although there is little shade. The sea is quite rough and is good for surfing, although swimming is also possible. It is possible to learn to surf in Máncora. Ask in the hotels for someone to teach you. Sofia Mulanovich, the Peruvian ex-world surfing champion, learnt to surf in Mancora.

The beach of Las Pocitas, a few kilometres south of the town, is more attractive, with palm trees fringing the sand and the sea is much calmer and better for swimming. The Hotel Las Arenas, used by Llama Travel, is located on the beach at Las Pocitas.

In addition to the beaches, there are mud baths close to Máncora. There is also a good day trip to some pretty lagoons with waterfalls in the area. These are a one-hour drive from the town, followed by a walk of two hours. A guide is necessary for this.
