About Jerash
A short distance from central Amman lies one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the eastern Mediterranean region and indeed anywhere in the world outside of Rome: Jerash.
As one of the ten cities of the Greek Decapolis, Jerash is plush with monumental and sophisticated architecture constructed throughout the huge site.
Must-see sites include:
- The Oval Plaza, complete with a temple and theatre with the pillar lined causeway, ‘the Cardo’, leading to its entrance
- The Temple of Artemis, with its imposing entrance
- The impressively complete North Theatre and the Byzantine-era Christian church with a largely intact tiled floor
A day can easily be spent exploring the city and its rich, still-standing history.
