Japan

Japan has one of the world’s most unique and influential cultures, recognised internationally for its food, media and traditions. This island, around 50% larger than the UK and home to around twice the population (over 120 million), is home to some of the world’s most iconic images, from the bustling pedestrian scramble of Shibuya Crossing to the symmetrical stillness of Mount Fuji, and the red torii tunnels of Fushimi Inari.

Tokyo, the world’s most populous city, is undoubtedly a highlight of a visit to Japan. Known for its unique modern aesthetic, the bustling streets and distinct quarters are home to unique bars, themed cafes and fantastic souvenir shops. There is also a more traditional side to the city, with many shrines, gardens and museums.

Kyoto, the former imperial capital of Japan, has around a millennium’s worth of history still well intact, including the famous Fushimi Inari, a shrine comprised of 10,000 torii gates, and Ryoanji’s famous Zen garden.

Seeing Mount Fuji rise above Lake Ashi is a definitive moment of any trip to Japan; sailing on the lake for unique views of the iconic volcano provides a unique perspective.

There is a choice of direct flights between the UK and Japan. Llama Travel holidays include direct flights from London Heathrow to Tokyo, which tend to take between 13 and 14 hours. Indirect flights can take anywhere from 16 to 20 hours depending on the stopover location and duration.

On arrival, Japan is either 8 hours or 9 hours ahead of the UK, depending on the time of year of a holiday (8 hours ahead during British Summer Time, 9 hours ahead during Greenwich Mean Time). We include three nights in Tokyo at the start of our tours of Japan, with a day at leisure on arrival, to adjust to the time difference.
