Asian Railway Holidays

Japan

The engineering feat of the Shinkansen Bullet Train in Japan is a marvel to behold; the trains reach speeds of up to 300 kilometres an hour, and have been constructed with long noses to avoid causing sonic booms in tunnels. Despite the rapid speeds, there is plenty of time to enjoy views of the Japanese countryside as you travel between cities.

India

India's UNESCO-listed Shimla Toy Train climbs from Kalka to Shimla on a five-hour route with a quaint charm. The train was initially built to bring the British Raj to the summer capital of Shimla, in the Himalayan foothills, to escape the lowlands' summer heat and rains. The train crosses over 800 bridges and passes through 100 tunnels on its 60-mile route, with spectacular views throughout.
