Kruger Region
South Africa is a top destination for safari lovers, offering diverse wildlife experiences and easy access to excellent reserves and lodges. The iconic Kruger National Park is one of Africa’s largest protected areas, spanning nearly two million hectares of classic safari landscapes. Home to the Big Five, lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo, it also hosts wild dogs, cheetahs, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, and an incredible variety of birdlife.
While Kruger itself is managed by South African National Parks, many private reserves have been established along its borders. Some have removed fences, allowing animals to roam freely, while others operate as exclusive, fenced reserves. These private reserves often provide more intimate wildlife encounters, with fewer vehicles and greater flexibility on game drives. All safari options we offer have a similar format, with game drives in the morning and afternoon, and time to relax around the lodge in the middle of the day.

Franschhoek in the winelands
Franschhoek, a picturesque town in South Africa’s Western Cape, lies in a valley surrounded by vineyards and towering mountains. Known as the country’s ‘food and wine capital’, it offers world-class wineries, outstanding restaurants, and a strong French heritage reflected in its culture and architecture.
One of the best ways to experience the region is on the Franschhoek Wine Tram, a scenic hop-on, hop-off journey through some of South Africa’s finest wine estates. Alternatively, visitors can explore nearby Stellenbosch and Paarl, two historic towns also known for their wine, beautiful buildings, and excellent dining.

Oudtshoorn
The town of Oudtshoorn exists thanks to its roots in ostrich farming, and its ideal location in the semi-arid Little Karoo. In the 19th century, the town flourished due to the demand for ostrich feathers in Europe. While feathers are no longer in fashion, the area still features working ostrich farms and grand homes built by the prosperous ‘ostrich barons’. Visitors can explore these farms to learn about the history of ostriches.
Beyond ostriches, Oudtshoorn is also known for its thriving meerkat population. As part of Llama Travel’s Best of South Africa + Kruger Safari itinerary, you can take part in a guided meerkat encounter.

Knysna
Continuing along the coast, less than 2 hours away from Oudtshoorn, the landscape is greener and fresher as you leave the semi-desert and mountains behind and reach the craggy coastline. You eventually hit the town of Knysna, hemmed in between its forest and lagoon. Here, streets are lined with cafés, shops and art galleries along the water’s edge.
Knysna boasts one of the loveliest settings on the coast. Surrounded by the lush green vegetation that this region is known for, it also benefits from its position on the edge of a lagoon. Much of the town is positioned around the water, with lovely views of the lagoon, the Knysna Heads and the Featherbed Nature Reserve. Featherbed and the Heads mark the point where the lagoon enters the ocean beyond.
When travelling with us, you will drive for three hours from Oudtshoorn to Tsitsikamma National Park. Crossing the Outeniqua Pass, a spectacular drive through the mountains, with numerous rivers, streams and waterfalls, then continuing along the dramatic coast to the mouth of Storms River and Tsitsikamma National Park.

Tsitsikamma National Park
Tsitsikamma National Park is a marine reserve most famous for its suspension bridges. You can walk along wooden walkways and paths through the forest, admiring the beautiful scenery around Storms River, a powerful river that winds its way through the Tsitsikamma Mountain Range and into the Indian Ocean. Cross the 77-metre suspension bridge, from where you can admire the surroundings and wild waters.
The national park is a popular attraction to experience this region's natural splendour and adventure opportunities, and the park’s natural beauty.

Hermanus
Driving along the Whale Route Road from Knysna to Hermanus, you will see dramatic coastlines and fynbos, a unique kind of vegetation in the Eastern and Western Cape. Hermanus still has a fisherman’s village charm and offers a relaxing introduction and a pleasant stop on the way to the Garden Route.
Situated between the mountains and sea, it has gained worldwide recognition for its whale-watching opportunities, and between July and November, it is often possible to see southern right whales breaching from the cliffs of Hermanus. At other times of the year, you can also look out for humpback and Bryde’s whales, dolphins, seals, penguins and marine birds.

Cape Town
This city steals hearts, and it’s easy to see why. Table Mountain cuts a striking figure above the city centre, surrounding the central business district and its nearby suburbs, while the beaches are picture perfect – although the icy Atlantic water isn't ideal for swimming unless it's very hot, or if you're brave enough to venture into wild swimming in cold waters.
Table Mountain provides a beautiful city backdrop and is a major reason why holidays to Cape Town are so popular. A rotating cable car travels to the top in roughly five minutes, offering views across the city, the harbour and ship-dotted Table Bay. At the top, you get the views, as well as the interesting indigenous plants, known as fynbos, and the small rock hyraxes, birds and tortoises which live on the mountainside.
Cape Town, South Africa
In the city, the V & A Waterfront is a lively area full of shops, restaurants, and entertainment options. Nearby, the colourful Bo-Kaap is renowned for its multicoloured buildings and rich history, with a mixture of Malaysian, African, Indian and Sri Lankan cultures dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Growing only indigenous South African plants, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is known for its diversity of flora, with a picturesque setting against the eastern slopes of Table Mountain.

Also visible from the city is Robben Island, the prison island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years. Today, the island is a fascinating museum, accessible via a short ferry ride from the Cape Town Waterfront.
Further south is Cape Point, where there is plenty of wildlife, including deer and zebras, as well as the old funicular, beautiful beaches and some pleasant walks. Around the point, you’ll find the scenic Chapman’s Peak Drive, a beautiful coastal road carved into the mountainside. The road ends in the fishing village of Hout Bay, home to a traditional harbour and fishing community – a good place to take a pause, enjoy some fresh seafood, or take a boat ride to Duiker Island. The island is home to a seal colony and subsequently is brimming with white sharks and seabirds.
