Danum Valley is one of the last remaining stretches of untouched primary rainforest in Borneo. It is a remote, protected area where the forest has been left to grow wild. It takes around three hours by road from Lahad Datu to reach, and once you are there, you are deep in the jungle, with nothing but rainforest for miles in every direction.
The jungle is home to orangutans, gibbons, hornbills and flying squirrels, though wildlife spotting needs patience and a bit of luck, as it can be unpredictable. Part of the experience is simply being there, walking through the ancient forest, hearing it come alive at dusk, and knowing that very little has changed here for centuries.
Borneo Rainforest Lodge, included with Llama Travel Borneo holidays, is located in the heart of the Danum Valley, and is one of the finest rainforest lodges in the world. It offers chalet-style accommodation overlooking the river or forest canopy, with raised boardwalks connecting rooms to the main lodge. Alongside local guides, visitors can enjoy the area’s unique biodiversity, including rare plants, insects and mammals. There is also a canopy walkway, offering a different perspective on the forest and a good chance of spotting birds and primates.
