Osaka

Osaka is Japan’s vibrant second city, famed for its lively atmosphere, excellent food scene and welcoming locals. Often described as the nation’s kitchen, the city is renowned for its street food, particularly in districts such as Dotonbori, where neon signs reflect off the canal and stalls selling takoyaki and okonomiyaki line the streets. Osaka’s trading heritage has given it a warm, energetic personality, quite different from Kyoto’s more traditional feel.

Historically, Osaka Castle played a key role in unifying Japan during the sixteenth century, and today it stands proudly within a spacious park, offering panoramic views of the city. The surrounding area is dotted with museums, temples and gardens, providing a glimpse into Osaka’s rich cultural heritage. Modern attractions include the Umeda Sky Building, with its dramatic open-air observatory, and Universal Studios Japan, a popular theme park featuring film-inspired rides and shows.

The city is also known for its distinct neighbourhoods, each with its own personality. Shinsekai, with its retro charm and Tsutenkaku Tower, offers a nostalgic look at mid-twentieth-century Japan, while Kita (Umeda) is home to major shopping centres and transport hubs. Osaka’s efficient rail network makes it easy to explore both the city itself and the wider Kansai region, with Kyoto, Nara and Kobe all reachable within an hour.
