Egilsstadir is the largest town in east Iceland, located on the banks of Lake Lagarfljót. Although it is the largest town in eastern Iceland, the population is only around 2,500 people. Unlike much of Iceland, this is an area of forests and the scenery is very different from the rest of the island, although not as dramatic. It is an ideal stop on the Ring Road before venturing to the south coast.
