Considered the cultural heart of Morocco, Fes is a maze of sprawling alleyways and ancient labyrinthine souks. Founded during the 8th to 9th centuries, the old town consists of two medina quarters, Fes el-Bali and Fes Jdid, which is believed to be one of the world’s largest urban pedestrian zones. Hours can be spent wandering the warren-like alleys where hidden treasures can be stumbled upon around every corner. The Medina is magnificently unchanged and is famed for its diverse architecture and splendid handicrafts.
Key sites include the wonderfully restored Bou Inania Medersa, a theological college, and the iconic Bab Bou Jeloud or ‘Blue Gate’ that marks the entrance to the Old Medina.
At the Chouara Tannery you can witness the preparation and dying of animal skins in the traditional way with a multitude of hues.
