Things to know before travelling to India

India is a country with a mix of ancient traditions, colourful cities, varied landscapes, and incredible food. It can feel exciting and a little overwhelming at the same time. We’ve put together answers to some of the most common questions our travellers have. From visas and weather to food and transport, here are ten useful things to know before your trip.

1. Do I need a visa to travel to India from the UK?

Yes, British nationals need a visa to visit India. You can apply online for an e-visa before travelling on the e-visa website. Your passport must be valid for at least six months after your return to the UK and have two blank pages.

2. What is the best time of the year to visit India?

The most comfortable months to visit India are from October to March, when the weather is ideal for sightseeing. In the northern parts of the country, daytime temperatures during this period are around 15 to 25°C, while average night time temperatures are around 10°C.  In December and January, night time temperatures can drop down to 5°C in cities like Delhi and Shimla. This is also a festive time, with Diwali usually taking place in late October or November. For more information, have a look at our India holidays.

3. What should I wear when traveling in India?

Light, comfortable clothes are best, such as loose-fitting shirts, t-shirts, long dresses, trousers, skirts, and knee-length or longer shorts. Layers are useful for cooler mornings and evenings. A warm jacket, fleece and a beanie are useful in December and January when it can get quite cold, especially at night. A scarf or pashmina is handy for covering shoulders or as a headscarf when visiting temples.

4. What food and drinks are common in India?

Indian food varies by region but is generally spiced rather than always hot. Typical meals include rice, roti (flatbread), dal (lentil), vegetable dishes, and often meat, fish or seafood. Tea (masala chai) is very popular and is one of the most common drinks in the country. Always drink bottled or filtered water instead of tap water.

5. Is English widely spoken in India?

English is widely spoken in tourist and residential areas. In rural areas, it may be limited, but guides and hotel staff on tours usually speak good English. A simple “namaste” when greeting people is always appreciated and a nice way to connect.

6. What is the currency in India & the tipping culture?

The currency in India is the Indian Rupee. Debit and Credit cards are widely accepted across tourist areas, hotels and restaurants. Tipping is common for guides, drivers and hotel staff. In restaurants, a tip of around ten percent is appreciated, although service charge is sometimes included. If you want to tip guides or drivers, £2 – 3 per person per day is usual if you are in a group.

7. How do I get around in India?

Transport within cities includes taxis and rickshaws. Ride-hailing apps like Uber and Ola are also widely used and can be a convenient way to get around in most urban areas. For journeys of four to five hours between cities, private vehicles and trains are common. For longer distances, there is good domestic flight connectivity. Roads can be busy and driving standards differ from the UK, so it is advisable to rely on arranged transport with a driver.

8. How long is the flight from the UK to India?

Direct flights from London to Delhi take around eight to nine hours. Flights with a layover via the Middle East are common, often taking 11 to 13 hours.

9. What are the best options for SIM cards and data in India?

Buying a local SIM card at the airport or in major cities is easy with your passport as ID. Networks like Airtel and Jio offer good coverage and affordable data plans. Alternatively, international roaming is also a convenient option.
