Winelands (Stellenbosch & Franschhoek)

The South African winelands feature on just about every South Africa itinerary for good reason. Located a short drive from Cape Town, the original Winelands area (for the Western Cape’s vineyards now extend far and wide across the province), consists of small towns – Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl, to name a few – and tall mountains.

Stellenbosch is an elegant, historical town situated about 40 kilometres to the east of Cape Town. Surrounded by wine estates, the town is characterised by stately Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian architecture along its oak-lined streets.

Visiting the Cape Winelands, you will be struck by the extensive vineyards, many of which reach right up the slopes of the surrounding mountains. At the heart of these historic farms is often an iconic Cape Dutch farm house, one of the many charms of the area. The towns and villages here also benefit from the mountain and vineyard setting, as well as having their own architectural charms – and in many cases, multiple restaurants serving great meals and excellent wine.
