7 Reasons to Travel to Mexico with Llama Travel

From ancient pyramids and jungle ruins to mariachi music, colourful towns and regional dishes, Mexico offers a lot in one trip. Explore archaeological sites, wander through colonial streets, taste dishes like mole poblano and unwind on Caribbean beaches. For a holiday filled with history, culture, food and nature, Mexico is an ideal choice.

At Llama Travel, we create high-quality holidays that offer flexibility, security and great value for money. See below why our Mexico holidays really are better.

1. Small Groups

At Llama Travel, our groups average just 11 people, with a maximum of 14 passengers in Mexico, making it easier to get around and enjoy each experience without feeling rushed. Smaller groups allow for a more personal experience, with more time to ask questions, interact with your guide and enjoy each destination. Whether exploring jungle ruins or wandering colourful colonial streets, travelling in a small group lets you experience Mexico in a more meaningful and enjoyable way.

2. Build the Holiday You Want

Everyone has different priorities for their holiday to Mexico, and at Llama Travel, we let you mix and match extensions, excursions and accommodation to create the holiday you want. Explore Mexico City’s historic centre and nearby Teotihuacan, wander through the colourful streets of Mérida, and discover ancient Maya sites including Palenque and Chichén Itzá.

You can then extend your trip to relax on the white-sand beaches of the Riviera Maya, or add a visit to Oaxaca to enjoy some of Mexico’s most celebrated regional cuisine.

3. Discover the highlights of Mexico

All Llama Travel’s Mexico itineraries include the country’s must-see highlights, from ancient Maya ruins and colourful colonial cities to some of the most important archaeological sites in the world. Each part of the journey is carefully planned so you can see the very best of Mexico.

a) Explore Palenque’s Maya ruins in the jungle

Palenque is one of Mexico’s most impressive Mayan sites. It sits deep in thick jungle, where howler monkeys roar and their echoes can be heard through trees. Climb the Temple of the Cross for views over the ruins and forest canopy.

b) Walk through colourful streets of San Cristobal de las Casas

San Cristobal de las Casas is a colonial town in the Chiapas highlands. Its streets are lined with brightly painted buildings, small cafes, craft shops and old churches. Walking through San Cristobal is a good way to see Mexico’s cultural diversity and traditional life in the highlands.

c) Admire the historical centre of Mexico City

All Llama Travel’s Mexico itineraries include three nights in Mexico City, giving you time to explore one of the most vibrant capitals in Latin America. Wander the bustling streets of the UNESCO-recognised Historic Centre on your own, or take the optional half-day Mexico City Walking Tour, which gives you a feel for local culture with a visit to a food market, a walk around the main Zocalo square, and stops at the National Palace, home to Diego Rivera’s murals, the Metropolitan Cathedral, and the remains of the Aztec Templo Mayor.

Many travellers also choose the full-day excursion to the pyramids of Teotihuacán, where you can walk down the wide Avenue of the Dead, and admire the Pyramid of the Moon up close.

d) Visit Chichen Itza, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World

Set in the heart of the Yucatan peninsula, Chichen Itza is one of the most important Maya Centres in the region. At Chichen Itza, the giant Kukulkan pyramid remains an awe-inspiring sight. Walk around to see the Temple of the Warriors, the Grand Ball Court and the Observatory, all covered in carvings that tell stories of ancient gods and ceremonies.

4. Unique Experiences

At Llama Travel, we believe that beyond the main highlights of a country, it’s the local experiences that often stay in the memory. In Mexico, these moments give you the best feel of the country.

a) In the winter months, from December to February, Piedra Herrada hosts thousands of monarch butterflies that migrate to Mexico from as far afield as Canada. Witnessing thousands of monarch butterflies resting in the trees and flying above you is a truly memorable sight.

 b) Lucha Libre is a way of life for many locals, second only to football in popularity. Get your adrenaline pumping as you watch wrestlers dressed as superheroes fight inside the ring, and perhaps buy a mask to take home to remember it.

 c) A short distance from San Cristóbal exists a whole other world which you will discover in our half day Maya Villages excursion. After a walking tour of San Cristobal’s centre, visit two fascinating Tzotzil villages where you encounter the hybrid Maya Catholic culture in an authentic interaction with the local villagers.

 d) Sumidero Canyon is one of southern Mexico’s most impressive natural sights. The two-hour boat ride takes you past waterfalls, caves and towering rock faces, with chances to spot crocodiles sunbathing on the banks and herons fishing nearby. It is a great way to see some of Mexico’s picturesque scenery.

 e) On the road to Campeche, you will briefly make a stop at the lesser-visited Maya ruins of Edzná, an impressive archaeological site that offers insight into this pre-Columbian civilisation.

 f) Swim in a cenote, one of the Yucatán Peninsula’s most unique natural features. These natural freshwater pools were sacred to the Maya, and taking a refreshing dip in their clear, cool waters is a memorable way to experience Mexico’s natural beauty.

5. Relax on the white-sand beaches of Riviera Maya

After exploring ruins and colourful towns, the Riviera Maya is ideal for relaxation. This stretch of coastline runs south from Cancun along the Caribbean Sea, with white sandy beaches, clear water and coral reefs. Areas like Playa del Carmen and Tulum are popular for their laid-back atmosphere. You can swim in fresh-water cenotes or take a short 30-minute ferry ride to Isla Cozumel, known for its scuba diving and snorkelling.

6. Extend your trip to Oaxaca to enjoy Mexico’s Culinary delights

Oaxaca is one of the best places in Mexico to try regional dishes. It is famous for its seven types of mole, a rich sauce made with chillies, spices and chocolate, usually served over chicken, as well as tlayudas, which are large crispy tortillas topped with beans and cheese. There is a busy market selling spices, dried chillies and sweets, giving you a real glimpse into local food traditions.
