Ask an Expert: Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan’s Silk Road history, vibrant culture, and UNESCO-recognised architecture are earning it growing renown as one of Asia’s outstanding destinations. For this blog, we caught up with Otto, one of our in-house Travel Experts, about his recent trip to the destination to unpack the highlights and provide you with some pointers if you are planning to visit.
If you want to talk directly to one of our Travel Experts, contact us here, or order a brochure here to browse our full range of holidays and further details of our 12-day Uzbekistan tour.
How was the journey there?
The majority of our small group flew directly with Uzbekistan Airways from London Heathrow. It was a smooth flight, and the food on the plane was decent. I recommend downloading some films to help pass the time, as the flight can take up to 7 hours. It was certainly a much easier journey than the contestants in Race Across the World recently endured to get to Uzbekistan!
What was your favourite destination?
All the cities on the tour were brilliant, but if I had to pick, I would go with Bukhara. Wandering into the Old Town every evening was really enjoyable; a chance to take some photos, gaze up at the dazzling buildings, dine in one of the many restaurants on offer and watch the world go by as the sun set.

The silhouette of Uzbekistan’s iconic domes and minarets against the sunset is a beautiful sight.
What was the highlight of your trip?
It has to be Registan Square in Samarkand. This complex was truly remarkable to visit and take in, with its ornate Madrasas decorated with mosaics, friendly shop vendors, and trees scattered throughout, offering a bit of greenery against the dramatic backdrop. Our time here, just three hours, flew by!
Where was the best place you stayed?
I really enjoyed our stay at the Mercure in Bukhara. The décor was beautiful and in tune with Uzbekistan's vibrant colours; the rooftop restaurant served great food throughout the day, and it was less than a 15-minute walk from the Old Town. There’s also an indoor pool if you fancy a swim.
Did you pick up any souvenirs?
There are souvenir shops aplenty throughout the tour. Each location offered wonderfully decorated trinkets, silk & cotton clothes, fragrant spices and some great red wine too. You won’t come back empty-handed, that’s for sure!
How did you find the locals?
I found the locals really friendly and welcoming. A pleasant surprise was the laidback atmosphere in the bazaars and small markets. Locals working the stalls let me browse in peace and assisted when required.
Umeda, our guide, was a breath of fresh air throughout the tour and was always ready to help and show the best of her country. We went for some delicious meals, and she took care of us from start to finish.

Llama Travel’s local guides are considered a highlight of our small group tours.
How was the food?
It was a carb-heavy diet throughout the trip, but I was in my element. The bread, the rice, the noodles and wonderful broths and stews. Green tea was always a welcome accompaniment to soothe the digestion. Please find some recommendations below that I thoroughly enjoyed and were never too far from the hotels:
Tashkent: Besh Qozon
Bukhara: Mazza Kafe, Zargaron Restaurant
Samarkand: Boulevard Restaurant & Bakery, Gruzinka Restoran
What was your group like?
As Llama Travel has a maximum group size of 18, Llama Travellers were divided into two groups on this date, which operated completely independently. I was in a group of 10, and we all got on really well. Everyone was friendly and engaged in the wonderful culture and unique identity of the country. Some meals were also shared (booked by our very friendly guide), which gave us a great opportunity to both enjoy the local cuisine and reflect on the day together.
What's your favourite photo from the trip?
This one of the ceilings in the Tilya-Kori Madrasa, Registan Square. The sun was beaming, and colours were popping.

Who would you recommend this trip to?
Uzbekistan is perfect for anyone keen to explore a new culture, especially those interested in photography and architecture. The buildings were a real joy to behold and appreciate. Our Uzbekistan itinerary isn’t too demanding on foot and can appeal to all ages.
