San Gerardo de Dota is one of Costa Rica's best-kept secrets. Tucked away in the cloud forests of the Talamanca Mountains at an altitude of over 2,500 metres, this tiny village is a world apart from the country's tropical beaches. Surrounded by oak forests and crystal-clear rivers, it offers cool mountain air, peaceful scenery and some of the finest birdwatching in Central America.
Most visitors come in search of the resplendent quetzal, one of the world's most beautiful birds. The best chance of spotting one is at dawn, when guided walks head into the cloud forest in search of these elusive birds, recognised by the males' shimmering green plumage and long tail feathers. Even if the quetzal remains hidden, the forests are alive with hummingbirds, tanagers and dozens of other colourful species.
The Savegre River flows through the valley, its exceptionally clear waters supporting a healthy population of rainbow trout. Gentle walking trails follow the river through moss-covered forest, while nearby waterfalls and wooden bridges make for rewarding short hikes. The cool climate also creates a very different landscape from much of Costa Rica, with towering oaks draped in orchids, ferns and bromeliads.
