Flores is an attractive and quiet town on an island on Guatemala’s second largest lake, Lake Petén Itzá. It is the gateway to Tikal, approximately one hour away.

Its narrow cobbled streets are lined with colourful red-roofed houses. They wind around the island, climbing to a park and historic church in the centre, from where there are good views of the lake and surrounding land covered in thick vegetation. It is pleasant to explore the maze of streets by foot, although the three-wheeled moto-taxis are also an entertaining way to travel. A short causeway links the island to the mainland districts of Santa Elena and San Benito.

Climate: The climate in the northern region of Petén is hot and tropical all year round. The warmest and driest part of the year is between March and May with temperatures regularly reaching 35ºC. The wettest months are June to November: during these months temperatures can also still reach 35ºC making it very hot and humid. The slightly cooler and drier part of the year is between December and February when temperatures drop to below 30ºC.
