Exploring South Africa & Victoria Falls

Exploring South Africa & Victoria Falls

Perched on the edge of the South Atlantic Ocean with the impressive Table Mountain as its backdrop, Cape Town, known as the Mother City of South Africa, is considered one of the most beautiful cities to many. Its rich history, shaped by Portuguese, Dutch and British influences, has created a unique cultural mix. After the end of apartheid, South Africa became known as the Rainbow Nation, and it remains one of the most diverse places you can visit. Travellers are often struck by the depth of local culture and frequently leave feeling genuinely touched by the warmth and friendliness of the people they meet.

South Africa offers a range of experiences across different regions. Cape Town’s stunning setting is just the beginning. The Cape Winelands are home to excellent wine and mountain views, the Garden Route is known for its lush scenery, and Kruger National Park offers renowned wildlife experiences. You can even end your trip with a visit to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe (it really couldn’t get much better!).

Recently returned from a trip to South Africa and Victoria Falls herself, Paige, Senior Travel Consultant at Llama Travel, shares some of her highlights and insights in response to some of our most frequently asked questions, helping you make the most of your holiday.

How was the journey there?

A direct flight from London Heathrow to Cape Town or Johannesburg takes around 11 – 11.5 hours. It’s a long flight, but you will not suffer any jet lag as South Africa is only one hour ahead of the UK. It is great to enjoy an adventurous holiday from the start without the tiredness!

What was your favourite destination?

Without a doubt, I most enjoyed my time on safari in the Kruger region. From the moment I landed at Hoedspruit airport, I was stunned by the dramatic Drakensburg mountains before delving into the African bushveld. You really experience a true sense of wilderness during a Kruger safari. I was lucky enough to see the Big Five plus hyena, crocodile, zebra, cheetah, hippo and many bird species.

Who would you recommend this trip to?

Wildlife lovers! From seeing all of the Big Five in Kruger, to spotting elephants and warthogs in Victoria Falls town, it’s best to have your camera and binoculars handy at all times.

What was the highlight of your trip?

I visited the mighty Victoria Falls and now understand why it is called Mosi-oa-Tunya, the smoke that thunders. Having visited Niagara and Iguazu already, I can now say I have been to the largest waterfalls in the world. On the Zimbabwean side, you stroll down the footpaths through drizzling rainforest, ending at gorge-edge viewpoints with great views of the thundering falls. Beware, you will get absolutely soaked in high water season (February to May)!

Did anything surprise you about South Africa?

Penguins! Boulder’s Beach on the Western Cape is home to Africa’s largest mainland penguin colony. You would never expect thousands of African penguins to live on a beach in a residential area, let alone be able to swim with them!

Local tipple?

The Cape Wineland region is home to over 500 wineries, and is a convenient 40-minute drive from Cape Town. I visited a vineyard in Franschhoek for a wine and cheese pairing session, which was delicious! The vineyard was framed by towering mountains and made for some beautiful photos. There’s also a wine tram in Franschhoek, making it very easy to get around.

Did you pick up any souvenirs?

It’s impossible to leave South Africa without Amarula, a cream liquor made from the African marula tree. For me, Amarula is best enjoyed with coffee!

What's your favourite photo from the trip?

The sun setting over the Zambezi River during the sunset cruise.

Where's next on your travel list?

I am hoping to revisit South Korea and Japan for the third time. As much as I love safari and wildlife, I also love the flashing lights and busy streets of cities like Seoul and Tokyo!
