7 Reasons to Travel to Botswana with Llama Travel

Botswana is one of Africa’s most rewarding safari destinations, known for its vast open plains and exceptional wildlife viewing. From the waterways and floodplains of the Okavango Delta to the wildlife-rich parks of Chobe and Moremi, travel here is about slowing down and spending time immersed in the bush. Game drives are relaxed, camps are comfortable and well-located, and the focus is entirely on the natural world around you.

Llama Travel’s Botswana holidays have been designed to ensure you make the most of your time in this incredible destination. Here are 7 reasons why you should visit Botswana with Llama Travel.

1. Small Groups

At Llama Travel, our mobile-tented safaris in Botswana have a maximum group size of 7 guests, making for a more relaxed and intimate safari experience. With 3 staff per group, you will be well looked after and have plenty of time to get to know your campmates and staff, which can make for a fulfilling holiday experience even outside of the iconic game drives.

Game drives are conducted in open-sided 4x4 vehicles, where every seat is a window seat, offering unobstructed views of the wildlife. Thanks to the small group size, your guide can follow wildlife movements with greater flexibility, potentially improving your odds of seeing certain animals depending on movement patterns. Combined with small group sizes, this creates a more personal experience, with more time to talk with your guide, ask questions and gain a deeper understanding of Botswana’s remarkable wildlife.

2. Enjoy the world’s best game viewing in the Okavango Delta's Mababe and Moremi regions

A highlight of travelling through Botswana is the excellent game viewing in the Moremi and Mababe regions of the Okavango Delta, and at Llama Travel, our itineraries are carefully designed to give you the best possible safari experience. In Moremi Game Reserve, you spend two full days on early-morning and late-afternoon game drives, when wildlife is most active. Sightings often include elephant, lion, cheetah, wild dog and a wide variety of birdlife. After morning drives, return to camp for lunch and time to relax, read a book, enjoy a bucket shower or take a siesta before heading out again later in the day. With very limited boundary fencing and mobile tents entirely unfenced from the wider area, wildlife roams freely, creating a truly natural safari experience.

After two nights in Moremi Game Reserve, you travel slowly north-east towards the Khwai and Mababe areas, enjoying river crossings, rich birdlife and the chance to spot hippos, crocodiles and elephants along the way. Mababe Private Reserve allows fewer vehicles than surrounding concessions, increasing the likelihood of exclusive sightings, from leopards resting in trees to hunting lions and wild dogs. Your camp is set on the shores of the Khwai River, with the possibility of a night game drive to spot nocturnal wildlife. You then enjoy two full days of early-morning and late-afternoon game drives, alongside spotting more wildlife and birdlife. There is also the opportunity for exploring the surrounding wilderness on foot, as this activity is seasonal, based on rain and grass height, your guide will determine if this can be carried out.

3. Stay in comfortable camps in amazing locations

Llama Travel mobile safaris are limited to a maximum of 7 guests, with 3 support staff per group, guaranteeing a wonderful level of service and a truly intimate travel experience. Camps are often set up in wonderful viewing areas, overlooking congregated waterholes or vast plains. Tents include proper beds, enclosed outdoor ensuite bathrooms, and porch areas. Shared areas like the tented dining area and campfire are designed to be sociable and comfortable.

After early morning game drives, you will return to camp for an early lunch and time to unwind. With no Wi-Fi, there are no distractions, guaranteeing a truly immersive safari experience. After late afternoon game drives, return to camp for a three-course meal and settle in beside the campfire with a beer or a glass of wine, sharing stories and reliving the day’s wildlife sightings with the rest of your group before settling into a cosy tent and falling asleep to the sounds of the bush.

The mobile nature of the tents means they move every couple of nights; on days when the campsite does move, you will return from the late afternoon game drive with the campsite fully set up by camp staff.

4. Discover the area with Letaka Safaris, set up by National Geographic’s ‘Safari Brothers’

To ensure the best possible safari experience in Botswana, Llama Travel works closely with Letaka Safaris, a long-established operator founded by the National Geographic ‘Safari Brothers’. Their deep knowledge of the Okavango Delta and surrounding regions means your journey is guided by people who truly understand the land and its wildlife.

Letaka Safaris run their own guide training school, producing some of the most skilled and knowledgeable guides in the area, with a strong focus on wildlife behaviour and conservation. They also operate their own well-maintained safari vehicles, designed for comfort and reliability in remote conditions, allowing you to explore with confidence and ease throughout your time in the bush.

5. Explore Chobe National Park, home to the largest concentration of elephants in the world

Explore Chobe National Park, one of Botswana’s most iconic wildlife areas and home to the largest concentration of elephants in Africa. Along the Chobe River, vast herds gather in the late afternoon, offering some of the region’s most memorable wildlife viewing.

With Llama Travel, you can choose to enjoy a relaxed free day at your lodge, perhaps do one of the activities around the park or join an optional Chobe Wildlife Excursion. This combines a game drive, where you spot Chobe’s spectacular elephant population and other game including lion, leopard, giraffe and buffalo, with an afternoon game viewing boat ride on the Chobe River. From the water, watch elephants crossing, large pods of hippo, crocodiles and abundant birdlife along the banks.

6. Extend your stay with a visit to the mighty Victoria Falls

After completing your wildlife adventure in Botswana, you may choose to extend your trip to witness the mighty Victoria Falls in neighbouring Zimbabwe, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. You have the flexibility to explore at your own pace or choose from Llama Travel’s excursions. Take the Victoria Falls excursion for an informative guided tour along the edge of the falls to learn more about the history and observe the local flora and fauna. In the evening, enjoy the Sunset Zambezi Cruise, a relaxing way to take in the river’s beauty and look for hippos swimming in the river.
