Argentina
Argentina is home to some of the planet’s most dramatic landscapes. The destination occupies much of South America’s southeastern corner, bordering Chile to the west, Bolivia to the north, Paraguay and Brazil to the northeast, and Uruguay to the east, with much of its southeastern side comprised of Atlantic Ocean coastline. Argentina’s incredible diversity of natural attractions spans almost 2.8 million square kilometres—nearly 11 times that of the UK.
Iguazu Falls, straddling the border with Brazil in northeastern Argentina, are possibly the most spectacular waterfalls in the world. Over 270 separate waterfalls, up to 80 metres high, stretch for a mile and a half through lush sub-tropical jungle. Due to their tropical location amidst the verdant rainforest, Iguazu Falls (and northern Argentina as a whole) are great to visit year-round.
The steppe of Patagonia in the south is home to vast sheep ranches and to the breathtaking Perito Moreno glacier, one of the world’s great natural wonders, where huge chunks of ice crash into Lago Argentino as the glacier advances. Tierra del Fuego, on the Beagle Channel, is the southernmost tip of the Americas. This region is particularly beautiful in the spring and summer months in Argentina, between November and April.
However, natural wonders are only part of the attraction. As well as being the capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires has long been considered the cultural capital of Spanish South America, and almost 40% of the country’s 46 million-person population lives in the Greater Buenos Aires area. Residents pride themselves on enjoying the good life, with excellent food, wine and sophisticated tango.
While no direct flights currently operate from anywhere in the UK to Argentina, indirect flights tend to take around 15-18 hours, including a layover. This relatively smooth journey and the time difference of just -3 hours during GMT and -4 hours during BST make adapting to the new time zone relatively easy, despite Argentina’s landscapes and culture often feeling a world away from the UK.
